He convinced Esau to sell his birthright for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:29-34), and later, with the help of his mother Rebekah, he deceived his father Isaac into giving him the blessing meant for Esau (Genesis 27).
Flight to Haran: After deceiving Esau, Jacob fled to his uncle Laban in Haran to escape his brother’s wrath. On his way, he had a dream at Bethel, where he saw a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. In this dream, God reaffirmed His covenant with Jacob, promising to bless him and his descendants (Genesis 28:10-22).
Marriage and Family: Jacob worked for Laban for 20 years, during which time he married Laban’s daughters, Leah and Rachel, and had twelve sons and one daughter. These sons became the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Return to Canaan: Jacob eventually returned to Canaan, where he reconciled with Esau. On his return, he wrestled with a mysterious man, who is often understood to be an angel or a manifestation of God. After this encounter, Jacob was renamed “Israel,” meaning “he who struggles with God” (Genesis 32:22-32).
Legacy: Jacob is considered the father of the nation of Israel. His twelve sons—Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin—became the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel.
