God removed Adam’s rib to create Eve, the first woman, as a companion and helper for Adam. This event is described in Genesis 2:21-22:
“So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.” (NIV)
This action symbolizes the intimate and equal relationship between man and woman. The rib, taken from Adam’s side, suggests that woman was not created to be above or below man, but to stand alongside him as an equal partner in life.
The removal of the rib also emphasizes the unique creation of woman. Rather than forming her from the dust of the ground as He did with Adam, God chose to create her from Adam’s rib, signifying the deep connection and unity between man and woman in marriage.
